What iOS 26 changes for partners selling travel eSIM

Apple has rebuilt the travel eSIM experience on iPhone: quicker installs, activation on arrival and automatic plan switching. What iOS 26 means for partners.

Apple has rebuilt the travel eSIM experience on iPhone. Installs are quicker, activation waits for arrival, and plan switching is automatic. If you sell travel data, your end users just got an easier product.

Most of the iOS 26 coverage is about the Liquid Glass design. The changes that matter for you are less visible: Apple have reworked how travel eSIMs install, activate and switch. Alongside the first eSIM-only iPhone sold worldwide, it is a clear signal about where mobile is going.

Here is what has changed, and what it means for the end users buying your eSIMs.

Installs take fewer steps

The old travel eSIM install on iPhone was slower and fussier than it needed to be. iOS 26 cuts the number of steps and makes the flow far easier to follow.

Pair that with custom eSIM branding on the eSIM Go platform and the whole install carries your name: installation label, network name, welcome SMS. Your brand, not ours, on every screen.

End users can install at home and activate on arrival

Earlier versions of iOS tied install and activation together. Fine if the end user was already in the destination country; a source of error messages if they tried to set up a travel plan before leaving home.

iOS 26 separates the two. The eSIM installs at home and activates when the end user lands. No more staring at an endless "activating" status, and fewer support tickets for you.

Plan switching is now automatic

iOS 26 uses Calendar, Mail and Siri to prompt the end user to turn on their travel plan 24 hours before departure, then prompts them to switch back to their home plan when they return.

That removes the single biggest cause of confusion with travel eSIM: forgetting to switch it on, or forgetting to switch it off.

Three install paths instead of two

QR code and direct install link are still there. iOS 26 adds a carrier app install path. Through it you can pre-fill the Home or Abroad and Data Only or Voice and Data settings, and send the device a list of ISO country codes so the iPhone knows exactly where the eSIM is valid. That makes automatic plan switching more accurate too.

One caveat: the carrier app path needs permission from Apple before you can use it. It is not formally tied to the Apple Carrier Bundle programme, but expect Apple to grant it to organisations that already hold Carrier Bundle permissions. If you want the technical detail, our FAQ article covers it.

Why this matters commercially

Over 80% of active iPhones update within two months of a release, so these features reach a very large audience almost immediately. Every barrier Apple removes from travel eSIM is a barrier removed from your product.

If mobile data is already part of your proposition, expect fewer failed installs and happier end users. If it is not yet, the product has never been easier to sell.
