The iPhone Air is eSIM only. Here is what it means for your mobile proposition
Apple's first worldwide eSIM-only iPhone means the SIM tray is on its way out. What the iPhone Air means for your mobile proposition.
For the first time, Apple have launched an eSIM-only iPhone worldwide, not just in the US. The physical SIM tray is on its way out, and the market for digital mobile just got bigger.
The iPhone Air is Apple's thinnest phone yet, and the headline for our industry is not the design. It is the SIM tray, or rather the lack of one. The iPhone Air ships eSIM only in every market it launches in (with some variation in mainland China, which Apple explain in their support article).
That is a definitive step away from plastic SIM cards at a global scale. For years the tray has been a universal but clumsy standard: buy a card, find a pin, swap it in, try not to lose the old one. Apple have decided that era is over.
What else is in the iPhone Air
For completeness, the other changes your end users will notice:
- A much thinner, lighter design that Apple say does not compromise on durability or performance.
- Upgraded cameras for photos and video.
- The A19 Pro processor, which Apple describe as delivering the best battery life and power efficiency of any iPhone to date.
- iOS 26 preinstalled on every iPhone announced on 9 September 2025, with its rebuilt travel eSIM install and switching flow. We have written about that separately.
The market was already moving. This accelerates it
Before the eSIM-only announcement, Juniper Research forecast that global travel eSIM users would grow by 440% over five years, and Kaleido Intelligence expected retail spend on travel eSIMs to rise from $3.3bn to $10bn within three. Those forecasts assumed a mixed installed base of SIM and eSIM handsets. The iPhone Air removes the choice for a growing share of premium users.
Every eSIM-only device in an end user's pocket is a device that cannot take a local SIM at the airport. Digital mobile is no longer the convenient option. It is the only option.
What to do about it
If you are a network operator, MVNO or brand that has not yet added mobile data to your proposition, the window for being early is closing. Your customers are buying eSIM-only devices now, and they will get their travel data from someone.
We make it easy for you to be that someone. You bring the brand and the customers; we handle the networks, the platform and the install experience. Live in days, not months.
Not offering mobile to your customers yet? Give it a go.
